Texas Foremothers Friday

On September 1st, more than 750 new laws will take effect in Texas, many of them harmful. But this September 1st would also have been Ann Richards' 90th birthday! Annie's List and Democrasexy are teaming up to honor Ann and four other Texas foremothers whose stories give us hope for the future and persistence to keep up our fight.

Texas Keeper Cider welcomes us for an intimate gathering in their taproom where we will create a simple and meaningful keepsake craft while learning from Becky Bullard of Democrasexy about First Lady Lady Bird Johnson, Rep. Barbara Jordan, Governor Ann Richards, activist Emma Tenayuca, and Rep. Sarah Weddington. We'll sift through historical photos and poignant anecdotes to find pearls of wisdom from their lives that will inspire us to successfully engage in changemaking today.

Election Lessons Learned: Comparing Notes on the TX Midterms

Texas progressives obviously have our work cut out for us when it comes to turning folks out to vote.

Leading up to the midterm election, I spent hundreds of hours creating content and events to try and drive voter turnout. I've compiled everything I learned from online & IRL interactions, surveys, and social media data into a brief presentation that I want to share with folks who are invested in galvanizing progressive Texans.

I also want to hear what you learned and observed this election!

Y'allentines Day

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my thems.
Let's show our love for trans, intersex & non-binary Texans! Because y'all means all.

A short recap of the 2022 Y’allentines Day party.

Trans, intersex and gender-expansive Texans have been under attack by our state leaders and they are tired, y'all. We believe that LOVE is stronger than hate, so that's what this event was all about.

We basked in '90s middle school dance party vibes including...

'90s jamz from DJ Boyfriend.

Live music from Latin Grammy nominee Gina Chávez.

Drag performances by Extragrams.

Wig bar by Coco Coquette.

Jonathan Krugman was doing makeup touches.

Sound Sight Tarot gave mini tarot readings.

Photo booth by Cozy-Core Boudoir with a chance to win a photo shoot worth $400!

Plus, Rev. Remington Johnson moderated a panel discussion on how we can be better allies with trans advocate and creator Angel Flores from Season 6 of Queer Eye, Tabitha Hamilton, founder of Black Trans Leadership of Austin, intersex activist and City of Austin Human Rights Commissioner Alicia Roth-Weigel, and child psychologist Dr. Janie Black.

Our silent auction raised more than $3,000 for Black Trans Leadership of Austin.

Tickets were free for trans, intersex or gender non-conforming folks and the caregivers of trans kids. Allies had the option to cover the ticket price for a member of the impacted community. This event was all about solidarity!

'90s attire like totally encouraged.

ASL interpretation was offered.

Democrasexy Book Club #1 - “Controlling Women: What We Must Do NOW to Save Reproductive Freedom”

Kathryn Kolbert helped secure Roe v Wade and then saved our constitutional right to abortion when she argued the Planned Parenthood v Casey Supreme Court case in 1992.

Recently she got up on the TED Women stage to give us her expert opinion on what will happen to abortion rights in the hands of the current Supreme Court.

I can still hear the collective gasp in the room when she said, “The federal right to abortion will be gone within the year.”

She did not stutter.

She did not say “maybe.”

She said, “Give up the idea that the courts will save us. The courts are done.”

Luckily there is a very! handy! blueprint Kathryn Kolbert and Julie F. Kay laid out for us in their book “Controlling Women: What We Must Do Now to Save Reproductive Freedom.”

For this book club, we will discuss the path laid out in this book as well as brainstorm other ideas, imagine new narratives, and figure out how to bring in others. We’ll begin the hour with a LIVE interview with Kathryn Kolbert, so don’t be late!

This is not a moment for despair. It is a moment for radical hope supported by creative and sustained action.

Roe is dead. What will we birth in its place?
