One thing that’s become clear through my work at Democrasexy is that Texans have a civic despair problem. Yes, there are systemic barriers that lead to a voter turnout rate that puts Texas at 49th or 50th in the country, but there are also emotional and psychological barriers. The Texan Optimist is a new project launching September 23, 2026 that aims to address the civic despair problem among Texans.

There’s a lot about Texas that doesn’t feel good right now
Our health is threatened due to abortion bans & the highest uninsured rate.
The nation’s 2nd largest LGBTQIA2+ population faces intimidation & violence.
We’ve had the most billion-dollar climate disasters of any state.
Progressive Texans are demoralized by voter suppression and gerrymandering (we’re ranked 49th in voter turnout).
…just for starters.
But we love Texas.
We won’t give up on her.
So what do we do?
We make it feel good to push for change in Texas.
By centering love, creativity, and community, we’re building a Texas where activism is not just effective, but deeply fulfilling.
Instead of draining, change-making feels sustaining.
Together, we’re creating a future full of hope, solidarity, and the pleasure of belonging.
